Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies (especially those in the technology sector) are moving their job interview processes online. Online interviews are safer and more convenient than an in-person meeting, but they also bring different challenges. If you want to land a position and really stand out from the crowd, it’s important to prepare in advance. We recommend focusing on three specific areas.
1.) Do your research. Before the day of your interview, make sure to set aside plenty of time to research the company you’re interviewing with. Visit their website and social media pages to gather as much information as possible on their products, value propositions and company culture. If you want to go above and beyond, take the time to research the competition as well. The more research you do, the better you can tailor your responses.
2.) Prepare a list of questions. Most job interviews present an opportunity to ask questions, but many candidates fail to take advantage. Asking several questions of your interviewer is one of the easiest and most effective ways to determine if a job (or company) is right for you. There are dozens of questions to choose from, but Glassdoor recommends:
3.) Dress the part. An online interview may be conducted from the comfort of your own home, but that doesn’t mean you should wear your pajamas. If you want to look and act the part, dress like you would to go into the office. When you look your best, you’re more likely to perform your best.
