The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted many industries, particularly travel, hospitality and tourism. But a new report from Indeed, released July 30, suggests the technology sector isn’t immune. Some of the key findings include:
Since Memorial Day, the economy has begun to trend upwards, but with the looming threat of more shutdowns and plenty of uncertainty, many businesses are pumping the brakes on their hiring processes or freezing them altogether.
Although it’s possible for many technology employees to work from home, the cost of hiring and firing within the industry is significant. A recent report published by the Congressional Budget’s Office cited the fact that many technology companies have “much longer planning horizons.” As a result, bringing on new staff members in the current economic climate isn’t a top priority.
The report from Indeed notes some technology professions are suffering more than others. For example, IT jobs and help desk operations are only down 32% since 2019, while data-scientist and IT management positions are down 43% and 45%, respectively. Additionally, technology job postings are recovering much more slowly than other industries.
