One of the biggest mistakes many top business leaders say they made in their career was that they hired the wrong person for the job.
Hiring someone that isn’t the right fit could cost your business a lot of money, especially if they don’t have the right skills or if they simply don’t have the passion or work ethic necessary to get the job done.
For a technology position, especially, finding the absolute best candidate is crucial. As a staffing company ourselves, we know a lot about how to hire and retain the best people. Here are a few key questions we recommend asking yourself when searching for the right candidate:
Does the candidate have the technical experience you need? Just about anyone can list technical skills on a resume. Instead of taking their word for it, be sure to test their technical skills by giving them a project to complete by a specified deadline. Once you receive their work, review it to see if they used the skills you’re looking for to complete the project. Doing a test like this is also a good way to eliminate candidates if you have a lot of high-quality applicants.
Does the person have the strengths needed to succeed in this position? Before answering this question, assess the current strengths of your team and the organization. What will this candidate bring to the table that your team or organization doesn’t already have? Will this new person add a lot of value to the organization? In addition to asking these questions, assess the candidate’s work ethic and past accomplishments. In the interview, ask the candidate specific questions about any previous positions or work and to give you concrete examples of big wins.
Will the candidate fit in well with your organization’s culture? When interviewing the candidate for the position, it would be a good idea to have your team present as well and allow them to ask any questions they have. This way you can see how the candidate interacts with the other employees on your team and get an idea on if they will be a good fit with everyone else.
These questions are just some of many things you should look for in a potential candidate. If you know of any others, feel free to let us know in the comments!
