Live video interviews are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, a 2013 survey conducted by Recuriter.com found that 63% of companies interviewed candidates online and that number has continued to grow since. While the idea of interviewing from the comfort of home might sound nice, it also presents challenges. A little bit of preparation can ensure your appointment goes off without a hitch.
Test your equipment beforehand. Online interviews are convenient, but they can also present problems.Test your camera, microphone, and streaming software before your interview and have a backup plan just in case. Keep a pair of headphones handy, make sure you have adequate lighting, and remove other distractions like roommates, your smartphone or pets.
Dress and act the part. You might be interviewing from your bedroom, but you still want to look like a professional. Take the time to press your clothing, take a shower, do your hair, and brush your teeth. When you look your best, you feel your best. Once the interview starts, be confident, smile throughout the interview process and maintain eye contact just like you would in person.
Consider your background. Where will you be conducting your video interview from? If you have posters, pictures or bright lighting, you may want to take them down. Something that’s overly colorful or that could be deemed offensive may cause an unnecessary distraction or leave the wrong impression. You want the focus to be on you.
Finally, don’t forget to do your research about the company prior to your interview, and remember: it never hurts to send a ‘thank you’ note. You’ve got this — good luck!
