A 2017 report by Talent Works found that on average, a job seeker has an 8.3 percent chance of getting a job interview based off of one application. That means it can take anywhere between 10 and 20 job applications just to land an interview, and that doesn’t even guarantee you’ll land the job.

The same report found that the career you’re looking to pursue can also play a role in the length of your job search. For example, HR professionals have to search for an average of 84.7 days before landing a new job while sales representatives have to look for 94.7 days on average before securing a new position.

Put simply: searching for new work is an often long, discouraging and daunting process. Even with the economy plugging away and unemployment numbers continuing to drop, finding a job isn’t a guarantee. This is particularly true in a highly competitive industry like information technology.
